The rituals of dance and music in Jagannath temple can be traced back to 12th century. The temple layout itself provides for a dancing hall called Nata Mandir positioned between Jagmohan/ Mukhasala and Bhoga Mandir. The service of singing of Geeta Govinda to the accompaniment of the dance of the Devadasis has been duly recognized as an indispensable phase of worship codified in Records of Rights of the temple. The Devadasis are named as Maharis and in course of time Maharis dance has evolved into Odissi dance. Devadasis used to dance at the time of morning offerings (Baladhupa), Chandan yatra, Rukimi vivah at the temple of Lakshmi, on the day of Niladri Bija.
