A popular saying in Odisha is "a year has 12 months, but 13 festivals". As a matter of fact 13 festivals is symbolically said for hundred of religious festivals celebrated to mark auspicious occasions of different importance.

Festivals and celebrations related to Lord Jagannath are numerous and associated to legends and divine events. Many of them find place in mythology and legends.

Festivals associated with Lord Jagannath have secular, moral, philosophical and universal significance.

Some of the important festivals celebrated in Puri Jagannath temple are Maha Bishuba Sankranti, Akshya Tritiya, Chandanjatra, Niladri Mahodaya, Nrusingha Junma, Sitala sasthi, Rajendrabhisheka, Rukmini haran ekadasi, Champaka Dwadasi, Devasnana Jatra/ Purnima, Ratha Jatra, Hari Sayana Ekadasi, Nabakalebara, Karkata or Dakshinayan Sankranti, Chitalagi Amabasya, Jhulan Jatra, Gamba Purnima, Rahurekha lagi, Janmastami, Saptapuri Amabasya, Ganesh chaturthi, Rishi panchami, Nabanna, Radhastami Parswaparibarthana, Baman SJanma or Sunia, Anantha Chathurdasi, Indra-Govinda puja, Sahasra Kumbha Abhisheka, Dasahara, Kumara Purnima, Kartika brata, Deba/Hari Uthapana Ekadasi, Odhana sasthi, Prathamashtami, Deba Depabali, Pushyabhiseka, Makara Sankranti, Basantha Panchami, Magha Purnima, Sibaratri, Dola Jatra, Ramanabami and Damanaka chori.

Mahabhishuba sankranti, Snana Jatra, Ratha Jatra, Ganesh Puja, Dussera, Karthika Purnima,Basanta Panchami, Sivaratri, Deepavali festivals attract large number of devotees to the temple here at Hyderabad. Devotees in large number visit and seek blessings of the Lord also on English New year day, Ugadi, Pongal, Hanuman Jayanthi and on holidays. Special Pujas and decoration of deities are undertaken on auspicious occasions.

The celebrations of the above festivals have a lot of socio cultural significance. The festivals of Lord Jagannath revolves around the philosophy of equity love, compassion, sharing and caring, devotion, brotherhood, equality, secularism, non-sectarianism, upliftment of poor helpless and the fallen and humane. Festivals unite and strengthen bonding between humans and infuse divinity in them. Participations in celebrations is rewarded by blessings and purification of soul.
